Asmodee, which recently discussed reactivating its acquisition strategy, has already begun making moves. The prominent publisher and distributor has swooped in to pluck Zombicide from the shuffling form of a struggling CMON.
Zombicide has been at the vanguard of the new boardgame model since it first launched on Kickstarter 13 years ago. Since then, it has raised an almost unnerving amount of money, bringing in over $40 million with an assortment of crowdfunding campaigns that produced new versions of the game with different themes. There were modern-day, fantasy, and sci-fi versions to leave no corner of the market untouched, as well as tie-ins like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Boys.
CMON has fallen on hard times, losing millions last year and ending up on the wrong side of the ongoing tariff war between America and assorted trading partners. The sale of Zombicide (which excludes the Marvel and DC tie-ins that the company says will remain under its control) follows the sale of titles like Arcadia Quest, Stardcadia Quest, Blood Rage, Rising Sun, and ANKH: Gods of Egypt as the companies look to bring in value from IPs that it cannot seem to properly support in its current financial situation.
Zombicide is arguably their most valuable property and is likely to prove to be an excellent addition to Asmodee’s catalog.
