In disappointing news, Mindwork Games has pulled the admittedly beleaguered Paradise – A Wastepunk Boardgame from Gamefound, ending the effort to crowdfund it. The game initially came to my attention before the campaign launched, and I was very excited about the changes they had made to their pricing structure after feedback from would-be funders.
Sadly, the new prices got a little more than 24 hours before Mindwork Games decided to pull the campaign. The company was very open in a statement about pulling the campaign, admitting that several mistakes were made along the way.
“We made several misjudgments along the way, and despite our efforts to fix things, the project lost its excitement and momentum. We believe it’s best to end this campaign now, as even if we reached our funding goal, it wouldn’t have the drive and energy we were hoping for,” said Matteo Di Diomede, CEO and Founder of the company.
The good news is that they do intend on still giving the game some form of release, but it will be directly through their website, and slightly reformatted. Sadly, PVC options for miniatures are dead; that side of the manufacturing just won’t be happening. They will be going ahead with resin miniatures, which is their specialty. They will also make downloadable PDFs of the rules, tokens to print and cut, and STL files for the scenarios available from their site for free.
The main focus now will be on releasing Paradise as a skirmish game and dropping the idea of the boardgame/skirmish game hybrid. Despite how this campaign went, I still think Paradise has a lot of potential, and I am curious to see what this new incarnation will look like and how much it will cost.
