Lyle Lowery, managing editor of Games Workshop’s monthly magazine, White Dwarf, has announced that he will no longer hold that role dude to corporate restructuring. After 75 issues leading the magazine, Lowery has been made redundant, and White Dwarf will, according to Lowery, continue on without that role being filled.
Lowery started with Games Workshop in January 2019, and before that, he spent over seven years with Privateer Press in an Editor in Chief position of their own magazine. This reveals an interesting move for Games Workshop, with the corporate restructuring potentially hinting at more redundancies to come.
White Dwarf is still a popular magazine for fans of Games Workshop products, although I am of the opinion that it has lost much of its spark and charm over the years, potentially due to editorial edicts from higher up the company than anything the staff did themselves who would have found themselves with a low cost interet to take advantage of when it came to getting the word out about their products.
Despite essentially acting as a catalogue of Games Workshop products, the staff over the years have done a wonderful job of filling it with personality-driven articles and content. Having picked up a couple of random issues over the years, it was apparent that this element of personality was holding on by its fingertips.
The removal of Lowery and the option to not have a managing editor in place is certainly worrying. A managing editor is not just an organizer and assigner of tasks; they lead a publication’s culture and will often imbue the staff with passion and a desire to push the boundaries of what can be done with available resources.
I wish Lowrery the best, and appreciate his years adding value and passion to a hobby that I love. For now, we can put this down to yet another confusing move by Games Workshop in recent years.
