Gamefound, a platform that specializes in board games, wargames, and TTRPG-related crowdfunding campaigns, has purchased Indiegogo, a crowdfunding platform that doesn’t specialize in anything.

Indiegogo was initially set up to challenge Kickstarter, and Gamefound was initially set up to handle behind-the-scenes duties for Kickstarter campaigns before pivoting into becoming its own crowdfunding platform in the hobby space.

Specializing in the hobby space really gave Gamefound an advantage, and rather than try to take on Kickstarter in the broader space, the company set its sights on beating them in this one small but highly lucrative area.

Per a report from BoardgameWire, Gamefound CEO Marcin Świerkot has stated that the plan is to make Gamefound campaigns discoverable via Indiegogo. There does not seem to be any plan to merge the sites or make dramatic changes to Gamefound at this point, which is good news, as it really is a great platform for the space.

Indiegogo will be moved over to Gamefound’s tech, which I do find interesting, as Indiegogo CEO Julie dePontbriand has stated that Gamefound has simply built the best crowdfunding tech available.

While I have learned to fear consolidation, as it implies some weight from the ever-present spectre of growth requirements to appease shareholders and stakeholders, it is also understandable that now is the time for Gamefound to make some moves. With global tariffs being in a constant state of flux, and with much of the manufacturing of the board games that they rely on occurring in China, diversification makes sense.

Aidan started in the hobby all the way back in 1989 with Hero Quest, quickly getting into Space Crusade, and then on into second edition Warhammer 40,000. Over the years he has played just about everything you can think of, but current favorite are Cyberpunk Red Combat Zone, Horus Heresy, Trench Crusade, and Dungeons and Dragons.
