Free League has been repeatedly striking gold in the TTRPG space. While it might seem hard to do anything too impactful in a scene with a lot of behemoths that enjoy deep customer loyalty, Free League doesn’t really care about that. The company’s approach to the roleplaying game market is to just release absolute bangers and let the quality carry the day.
Dragonbane is a translation of Drakar och Demoner, Scandinavia’s first and biggest tabletop RPG, originally launched in 1982. According to Free League, “this new and reimagined edition has one foot firmly planted in the heritage of decades of Swedish gaming and the other in the modern and innovative game design for which Free League Publishing is known worldwide.” It launched on Kickstarter in 2022, looking for 100,00 Swedish Krona, and it made nearly eight million instead.
Now, it’s back with some expansions.
- Arkand – City of Waves and Flames: The Arkand expansion takes you to the city with everything you could want. From the lowest dens of sin and filth to the highest spires of royal society, you can find anything you wish and interact with it any way you please. The book comes with over a dozen adventure sites spread across five different districts, promising you all manner of adventure.
- The Book of Magic – The Book of Magic brings new spells, new magical schools, stronger magic, and updates to the overall magic system. Fans of the game can also look forward to some deeper lore about each school and how they operate in the world.
Head on over to the Kickstarter page right now for a range of options, including some bundles, limited editions, and even some early backer rewards if you get there quickly enough.
I didn’t back Dragonbane the first time around, but I do plan on taking advantage of the large bundle this time and just grabbing everything. Mork Borg and the recent Mutant Year Zero have won my loyalty, what can I say?
