The bankruptcy procedure of a well-known comics and roleplaying book distributor looks like it might be about to have a serious unforeseen impact on an assortment of publishers who could end up seeing their stock disappear to pay off the distributor’s debt.

After initially filing for bankruptcy on January 14, 2025, Diamond Comic Distributors, which has been operating in the industry for 43 years, still had volumes of stock from some companies in its warehouse. This stock was given on consignment, meaning DCD would sell the stock, keep a share, and then provide the agreed percentage of revenue to the stock owners. Court documents now reveal that DCD has asked to be able to sell the consignment stock to meet its debts.

In a YouTube video titled They Went Bankrupt and Now Im Screwed, Roll For Combat’s Stephen Glicker goes into detail about just how this will impact his business. Glicker explains that the filed motion, if agreed by the court, will give DCD the right to sell the consigned stock, which Roll For Combat and other publishers own, and keep the profits to help meet their debts.

Not only will companies like Roll For Combat lose out on the value of the stock, but it could also end up on the market for sale at lower prices than they can provide, costing them even more money in potential lost sales. Glicker told Wargamer that DCD currently has “approximately $120,000 worth of our product in their warehouse,” which would be a substantial loss, especially as the cost to produce that stock again would be higher now.

This is a hugely complicated issue, but I would strongly suggest watching Glicker’s video below for more details, especially as this could end up negatively affecting many more small companies that potentially have stock on consignment with DCD.

The motion is due to go before the bankruptcy court on July 21, so we will have further updates at that time.
