Codex Black Templars art

News Warhammer

The Black Templars are known for being particularly, eh, enthusiastic when it comes to spreading the Emperor’s holy light in Warhammer 40,000, and if you’re the kind of person who enjoys their black armor with just a little smattering of blood, then the news is good.

Codex: Black Templars will be dropping later this year for the current (read, 10th) edition of Warhammer 40,000. While the Black Templars are perfectly playable right now, thanks to Codex: Space Marines, that’s just not the same thing. You can expect Chapter-specific rules that add a lot of flavor, such as Crusader Squads, Sword Brethren, and renowned characters like High Marshal Helbrecht and Chaplain Grimaldus.

The Black Templar Crusader Ancient

You can also look forward to rules for a rather slick new model, the Crusader Ancient. These guys have been around long enough and dispensed enough of the Emperor’s justice that they get to carry all manner of sacred icons, banners, and standards. Truthfully, recent miniatures in the Space Marine have left me a little gold (except for those sweet new Space Wolves), but this chap, I am all about.

You can almost see his hatred for the Eldar, Orks, heretics, and other assorted enemies of man burning through his helmet. Hell, there are probably all manner of xenos this chap hasn’t even met yet that he dislikes.

There is no release date for Codex: Black Templars just yet, which is a shame, but at least now you know it’s on the way. And don’t forget, there is usually some kind of force box you can pick up at the same time. In the last edition, Games Workshop did a very fancy version of the Black Templars codex and then almost instantly made it pointless with the tenth edition of the game, but at least you get to avoid that this time.

Aidan started in the hobby all the way back in 1989 with Hero Quest, quickly getting into Space Crusade, and then on into second edition Warhammer 40,000. Over the years he has played just about everything you can think of, but current favorite are Cyberpunk Red Combat Zone, Horus Heresy, Trench Crusade, and Dungeons and Dragons.
