A rather groovy looking skeleton.

The concept of contrast paints has become the Big Thing in miniature painting recently. Special formulations of paint allow pigments to sit lightly on raised areas and flow into recesses to instantly shade your miniatures. They can look very nice, resulting in outstanding results quickly, if you are willing to put in just a little effort to learn their nuances.

Games Workshop’s Citadel fired the first shot, but companies like Army Painter and Vallejo quickly fired back, refusing to miss out on this new market. Now, AK Interactive is diving in with their Quick Gen range.

They are touting a large range of paints with 79 colors, six metallic shades, and nine military tones, along with clear labeling to describe the color intensity. The range will go on sale at your Friendly Local Gaming Store on June 17, so we can assume some reviews will start to drop around then.

While it is easy to fall into the trap of wondering why yet another company is releasing the same product, you can easily argue that the whole concept of contrast paints hasn’t even started to be explored yet. From my own experience with the available ranges, I don’t feel there is a clear winner when it comes to coverage and product quality yet.

Ranges tend to have different strengths in different color areas, and Army Painter has already shown us that experimenting and reformulating quickly can really pay off, especially with their Metallic Speedpaints 2.0.

So, I am curious to see what happens with these paints, how well they behave on models, and where they settle into the hierarchy.

Aidan started in the hobby all the way back in 1989 with Hero Quest, quickly getting into Space Crusade, and then on into second edition Warhammer 40,000. Over the years he has played just about everything you can think of, but current favorite are Cyberpunk Red Combat Zone, Horus Heresy, Trench Crusade, and Dungeons and Dragons.
